How to Know You Are Saved

One of the most common struggles a new believer faces is doubt about their own salvation. The enemy whispers questions: Was it real? Did anything actually change? Am I truly saved? These doubts are not unusual, but they are not from God. The Bible was written, in part, specifically to give believers settled assurance.

The Apostle John, writing to believers, stated his purpose directly: "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). God does not want His children living in perpetual uncertainty about their standing before Him. He wants you to know.

Assurance is not arrogance. It is not the claim that you deserve salvation or that you are better than others. It is simply trusting the word of God more than your own fluctuating feelings. When God says you have eternal life, you can take Him at His word.

The most direct foundation of assurance is not your own faithfulness — it is the promise and power of God. Jesus declared, in language that leaves no room for uncertainty: "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand" (John 10:28–29).

Notice the double security: held in the Son's hand, and held in the Father's hand. The question is not whether you are strong enough to hold on to God, but whether God is strong enough to hold on to you. He is.

John 5:24 adds the tense that settles every doubt: "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." Hath — present tense, present possession. Eternal life is not merely a future hope; it is a present reality for all who believe.

Romans 8:1 adds the declaration: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" — no condemnation, not "less condemnation," not "condemnation depending on how well you do this week." None. This is what it means to be justified — legally declared not guilty, permanently.

Assurance is not only grounded in objective promises — it is also confirmed by an inward, subjective witness. Paul wrote, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God" (Romans 8:16). The Holy Spirit, who lives inside every true believer, bears an inward testimony that you are God's child.

This witness is not always dramatic, but it is real. It is the deep, settled sense — beneath emotions and circumstances — that you belong to God. When you cry out to God in prayer, you speak to Him as a Father, not as a distant deity. When you read Scripture, it speaks to you in a personal way. When you sin, you feel genuine conviction — not just embarrassment, but grief, because you have wronged someone you love. These are the marks of a living relationship, not dead religion.

John's first epistle provides a series of practical tests that help a believer confirm that their faith is genuine. These tests are not given so that you earn or re-earn your salvation by passing them — they are indicators, like a heartbeat indicating life. Real faith produces real fruit.

The test of obedience: "And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments" (1 John 2:3). A genuine believer has a desire to obey God. This does not mean perfection; it means direction. Do you want to obey? Does sin trouble you?

The test of love: "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren" (1 John 3:14). Do you love other Christians? Do you have a genuine affection for God's people — even imperfect ones?

The test of doctrine: "Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God" (1 John 4:2). Do you believe in the Jesus of Scripture — God the Son, truly human, truly divine, who died for sin and rose bodily from the dead?

None of these tests require perfection. They require direction — the unmistakable bend of your life toward God, however imperfectly you walk in it.

Even genuine believers can experience seasons of doubt — times when the assurance that once felt solid seems distant. This does not mean you have lost your salvation. It may mean you have drifted from the Word, allowed sin to go unconfessed, or simply passed through a trial that has shaken your confidence.

The prescription for doubt is not to try harder to manufacture certainty — it is to return to the promises. Go back to the cross. Go back to John 3:16, John 10:28, and 1 John 5:13. Remind yourself of what God said, not what you feel. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Confession restores fellowship. The relationship was never broken, but the communion can be refreshed.

If you find that after honest reflection you cannot identify any evidence of regeneration — no love for God, no desire for His Word, no sensitivity to sin, no love for His people — then the honest response is not to manufacture false assurance, but to examine yourself (2 Corinthians 13:5) and, if necessary, genuinely turn to Christ for the first time. The invitation is always open. "Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37).

But if the marks of genuine faith are present — even weakly, even imperfectly — take God at His word. You are His. And nothing can change that.
