The Hidden Treasure
Read the parable
- Matthew 13:44 Primary account
Context
In a land repeatedly overrun by armies and without banks, burying valuables in the ground was a normal way to protect them, and hoards whose owners had died or fled were sometimes discovered by later workers. A day-laborer plowing another man's field could legitimately come upon such a hoard; buying the field secured his claim to what lay in it. Jesus told this parable privately to his disciples inside the house, after dismissing the crowds.
Meaning
The kingdom of heaven is of such surpassing worth that a person who truly sees its value will joyfully surrender everything else to gain it. The accent falls on both the worth of the treasure and the joy of the finder — "for joy thereof" he sells all he has. Discipleship involves real cost, but the parable insists it is the bargain of a lifetime, not a grim sacrifice. It pairs with the pearl of great price: one man stumbles on the treasure, the other searches for it, yet both respond the same way.
